My Life with HSP11:
Living with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
When I was first diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia type 11 (HSP11), I had never even heard of it. I had no idea how it would shape my life — the challenges, the resilience it would demand, and the lessons I’d learn along the way. This is my story: a personal journey of living with HSP11, with the hope of educating, inspiring, and supporting others who might be navigating a similar path.

1- What is HSP11? Life with HSP11
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) is a group of rare, genetic neurological disorders that cause progressive weakness and stiffness (spasticity) in the legs. HSP11 is one of the many types, caused by mutations in the SPG11 gene. For me, the symptoms started subtly — occasional tripping, muscle tightness — but gradually, they became a part of my daily life.
2- My Journey with HSP11
I first noticed something wasn’t quite right when [share a personal anecdote — e.g., “I kept stumbling during my morning walks”]. At first, I brushed it off, thinking it was just fatigue or clumsiness. But as time went on, the stiffness in my legs worsened, and simple tasks like climbing stairs or even standing for long periods became increasingly difficult.
Getting the diagnosis was a mix of relief and fear — relief that I finally had an answer, but fear of the unknown. HSP11 is progressive, and that means it can get worse over time. But I’ve learned to adapt. I’ve leaned on mobility aids, adjusted my routines, and found support in friends, family, and online communities who understand what it’s like to live with this condition.
3- Challenges and Triumphs
Living with HSP11 isn’t easy. Some days, the frustration feels overwhelming. There are days when the stiffness is so intense that it feels like my legs are made of concrete. But there are also days of triumph — when I hit a new milestone, when I learn to do something differently that helps me regain a bit of independence, or when I connect with someone who truly understands.
4- Support and Resources
If you or someone you love is living with HSP11, know that you’re not alone. There are resources available:
HSP support groups (online forums and Facebook groups)
Physical therapy and mobility aids to maintain independence
Genetic counseling to understand inheritance and plan for the future
Mental health support to navigate the emotional side of living with a chronic condition
5- Final Thoughts
HSP11 is a part of my story, but it doesn’t define who I am. I’m still me — with my passions, my dreams, and my unique strengths. My hope is that by sharing my journey, I can help others feel less alone and more empowered to face the challenges ahead.
